Elena Katherine Moore, a 39-year-old personal trainer from Lexington, South Carolina, shared a series of cryptic Instagram posts expressing feelings of heartache, resentment, and eventual relief in the months leading up to her disappearance and death. Those close to her have raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the case, even as authorities reported no obvious signs of external trauma.
On a secondary Instagram account, Moore posted emotionally charged quotes. One May 2026 message described someone allowing her to âdestroyâ herself in order to keep âusâ alive, resulting in what she called an âexhausting hatred.â She wrote that she never wanted to look at someone she once loved with disgust and resentment. A longer quote she reshared in March spoke of âthe war is over,â expressing genuine happiness that a person was out of her life and describing a lighter feeling after the anxiety that once boiled inside her had lifted. An earlier December 2025 post referred to a âdehumanizingâ heartbreak.
A friend from her hometown of Lexington, Mendy Miller, told reporters that Moore had been on a deliberate fitness and personal-health journey that included cutting âtoxicâ people out of her life, including certain friends. Miller said Mooreâs disappearance was âabsolutely shockingâ because she was highly active on social media and would not simply vanish without explanation.
Moore was reported missing by her husband, Brannon Slice, on June 12, 2026, after she failed to return home. She was last seen leaving a Planet Fitness gym in Lexington on the evening of June 11. Surveillance footage showed her wearing an olive-green zip-up hoodie and black athletic pants as she walked toward a wooded area behind a nearby store. Five days later, on June 17, her body was discovered in a wooded area near Old Cherokee Road and Northlake Drive in Lexington County. She was positively identified shortly afterward.
The Lexington County Coronerâs Office announced that a preliminary autopsy found no immediate cause of death and no evidence of traumatic injuryâno bruising, lacerations, gunshot or stab wounds, blunt-force trauma, strangulation, or other external injuries. Further toxicology and pathology studies were pending, and officials said no additional details would be released until those results were complete and a final cause and manner of death determined. The death remained under active investigation by local police and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Friends expressed deep unease. Miller stated that while the autopsy showed no physical trauma, she still believed âsomeone had to have done somethingâ because finding Moore dead in the woods âmakes no senseâ to those who knew her. Another close friend, Sondra Campbell, previously reported that Moore had seemed âparanoidâ in the weeks before she vanished and had told her she was âscared for her life.â Campbell described Moore as someone she had known for more than a decade and with whom she shared nearly everything.
As of the latest available reports in late June and early July 2026, no one had been charged in connection with Mooreâs death, and the investigation continued. The combination of her recent social-media posts about emotional pain and freedom, friendsâ accounts of fear, the lack of visible trauma, and the remote location where her body was found has left many questions unanswered.
